Vandal holiday concert to air on IdahoPTV

November 28, 2018
The sounds of the holiday season echoing throughout the state will have a Vandal note to them this year thanks to a continuing partnership between the University of Idaho and Idaho Public Television. On Tuesday, December 11, IdahoPTV will air a 60-minute edited version of U of I’s 2017 holiday concert, which will debut at 7 p.m. Mountain and Pacific times.

The program will re-air at the same time on Christmas Day.

U of I’s holiday concert is an annual tradition that brings together nearly 1,000 performers from schools throughout the region. These students join the U of I Jazz Choirs and accompanying ensembles from the nationally accredited Lionel Hampton School of Music, part of the university’s College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences, to perform holiday classics.

“This event is a true celebration of collaboration, engaging elementary through high school musicians from regional schools, community members and University of Idaho students and faculty,” said Vanessa Sielert, director of the Lionel Hampton School of Music. “Distinguished Professor Dan Bukvich has created a musical extravaganza that is not to be missed.”

While more than 5,000 people attend the concert in person, the broadcast of 2017’s event will allow 98 percent of the state’s population to experience this special holiday performance. This is the third year IdahoPTV has shown the annual concert. The first broadcast was in 2016.

“We always love it when we can shine a light on local talent,” said Jeff Tucker, director of content services of IdahoPTV. “This concert from the University of Idaho, along with ‘A BYU-Idaho Christmas,’ are special treats for the entire state. We hope this helps families around Idaho enjoy the holiday season.”

Featured in the broadcast are the U of I Jazz Choirs and one of the four U of I Jazz Bands. They are joined by regional elementary, junior high school and high school choirs and a community bell choir.

“It is with great enthusiasm that the Lionel Hampton School of Music presents this year’s annual holiday concert to the Greater Moscow-Pullman community, and through the partnership with Idaho Public Television, to the state of Idaho at large,” Sielert said.

The concert is presented by the Lionel Hampton School of Music, the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences and the Office of the President.

The 2018 U of I Holiday Concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, December 7, in the ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center. It is free and open to the public, with donations accepted to support scholarships in the Lionel Hampton School of Music. The event will be live-streamed at https://www.uidaho.edu/news/ui-live.
