Badger boys soccer earns a most impressive honor

November 8, 2018
School District 101 Superintendent Gary Pfleuger received one of those letters Monday that warms the heart of an educator, and he wants to make sure everyone in the community is aware of the accolades and the students who earned them.

The letter came from Mike Federico, assistant director of the Idaho High School Activities Association, and it was about a Badger team that went to state. They fell just short of bringing home hardware, but what they did get was far more valuable.

"On behalf of the Idaho High School Activities Association's Board of Directors and the IHSAA Sportsmanship Committee," Federico wrote, "I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation and personally say thank you to the representatives of Bonners Ferry HS in winning the 2018 State 3A Boys Soccer Sportsmanship Award.

"Sportsmanship is a top priority of the IHSAA, the ideals of sportsmanship permeate virtually every aspect of our culture, and the ethics of fair play may be witnessed in all facets of life. The origins of sportsmanship have been firmly established in education-based activities as a training ground for good citizenship and high behavioral standards.

"At this year's tournament, an independent committee judged all of the tournaments coaches, participants, administration, (and) spectators including parents and other representatives. Each school was evaluated on important behaviors that are guiding principles of sportsmanship and citizenship, and Bonners Ferry HS was a true example of a positive school culture and a community with pride.

"We would like to recognize Conrad Garner and Kevin Dinning as positive role models at Bonners Ferry HS. Their leadership was evident in the behavior of your coaches, players, school representatives and spectators at this year's tournament.

"Gary (Pfleuger), thanks again for making sportsmanship a priority at Bonners Ferry HS and in your district. It is the positive behavior of our school leaders that help provide the participants, as well as the spectators, with a memorable experience and an example of behavior that will last a lifetime."

Editor's note: Requests for a team and coaching roster and team photo have yet to be answered, but I could wait no longer to post this! Congratulations to coach Wayne Wilkerson and each member of the amazing 2018 Bonners Ferry High School 2018 boys soccer team. I hope to be adding names and pictures soon. ~ Mike Weland
